Our Key Spots in Key West

May 21, 2020

Do you love a spontaneous detour?

We decided to spend a few days in Orlando, FL in March before flying to Key West to celebrate Stephen’s parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. After getting all, and I mean all, of the theme park time that we possibly could, we boarded our plane to Key West. At this point, the COVID-19 crisis had begun to make its impact on America. We washed our hands constantly, used hand sanitizer religiously, and were really careful, taking every precaution possible. Just as we landed in Key West, Bret got a text informing him that Broadway was shutting down. This certainly set the tone for what we were about to experience. We pushed the negative news aside for the time being and were determined to have an amazing time - and we did!

Bret booked us an awesome room through AirBnB and Vacasa. The location was walkable to everything and included a private pool, exclusive to guests. They even had the most important and coveted amenity - toilet paper (it was impossible to find anywhere else). The room wasn’t glamorous and maybe a little dank, but it suited us fine, and was a fraction of the cost of everything else in Key West, which made us happy.

Our parents stayed at the Margaritaville Hotel which was right on Mallory Square, the tourist hub of Key West, where everyone, including us, flocks to see gorgeous sunsets. Margaritaville Hotel was close to sold out, even with the threat of the pandemic looming, and cost somewhere between $600-700 a night. So, we stayed a few blocks away in a crib that ran us about $200 a night - SCORE. BTW, the sunsets on Mallory Square are really remarkable and absolutely worth the hype.

we were packing for this trip, we wanted to make sure we showed some skin to take advantage of the sun and get rid of our white winter legs. So, we purchased some adorable shorts and swimsuits from Amazon. We wanted a 5-inch inseam to keep them short to show off our dancers’ legs and also wanted to embrace a more vintage vibe. Our swimsuits were from Chubbies, and we had no idea how perfect they would be with the number of roosters walking about. Most importantly, we did a lot of walking, and our Nisolo shoes were the best way to get around and look stylish. We’ve included links to all of our outfits in case you want a discount on new looks for the summer.

After Stephen’s parents’ (VERY) sweet vow renewal, we made our way to see a drag show. Well, not a drag show, but a female impersonator who was out of this world! Randy Roberts at La Ti Da does a spot on Bette Midler and had no idea that Stephen Hanna was in the audience, an original Broadway cast member of HELLO DOLLY. We, of course, stuck around and chatted about all things Broadway before preparing for our last day of sun and Key Lime Pie.

Our favorite key lime was from Kermit’s Key Lime Pie Shop. Trust us, we tried plenty before settling on a favorite. We soaked in some amazing sun, sweet calories, and each other before flying out of the cutest little airport in America. After a few gorgeous days of fun in the sun, we departed and landed in the Coronavirus epicenter and a world in lockdown mode.

Our final thoughts

It was the perfect trip to take before heading into quarantine. We were so lucky to have that time with family and new friends before heading back to reality. Once the world is back on its feet - and we will be back on our feet - don’t miss the chance to explore the quaint beauty of Key West.
