Ways to be Anti-Racist as a White Person

Jun 02, 2020

As a cis-gendered white couple in the midst of a global pandemic that has displaced us from our homes and our jobs, we are completely overwhelmed by the state of our country right now. We work in an industry that has a long history of racism, and we want to see that change.

Quite often we are afraid to say something because we don’t want to say the wrong thing. However, we are never going to get it right. Saying nothing isn’t enough, we must speak up to be anti-racist. We must have those uncomfortable conversations with our relatives and call out racism when we hear it.

If you don’t think you are racist, that’s GREAT, then become anti-racist and let’s help our brothers and sisters so we can change the culture in America. Here are some suggestions we are committing to, and we want you to join us.

Consider donating to support protestors working to make a difference:

DONATE HERE for multiple bail-out funds

  1. Ask clarifying questions: If someone says something racist ask them what they mean by it. Make them analyze their own thought process. Oftentimes, they’ll realize they were wrong, or at least begin to become aware.
  2. Be patient and persistent: Don’t block your aunt on Facebook just because you don’t like her statement. You have an opportunity to set an example and educate. It may not change today, but it can change over time.
  3. It is not the responsibility of people of color to explain racism to you: Do your own research and make yourself a non-judgmental resource to other white people around you.
  4. As we enter into Gay Pride Month, let’s not forget that the Pride movement is and was a protest started by Trans people of color. Help make a difference by supporting and donating to the following organizations.
  5. VOTE!: Pay attention to who is running for your local office, especially the sheriff and other leaders who can make a difference for racial justice in your area.

Consider supporting and following a handful of organizations if possible.

  1. The Audre Lorde Project https://alp.org/ - The Audre Lorde Project is a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two Spirit, Trans, and Gender Non-Conforming People of Color community organizing center, focused on the New York City area.
  2. Ali Forney Center - LGBTQ Youth experiencing homelessness. The youth is our future and the way to a future that is empowered for ALL people.
  3. LGBTQ Freedom Fund lgbtqfund.org - The Freedom Fund posts bail to secure the safety and liberty of people in jail and immigration detention.
  4. Arts Administrators of Color Network - https://aacnetwork.org/
